Daredevil
IsThe Defendersthe real reasonableness why Netflix ’s Marvel shows are being canceled ? With most of Netflix ’s MCU TV appearance already cancel , andThe Punisherlikely to be next , there ’s still a hang around question of why the serial are being give the sack so ruthlessly . There are a myriad of reason behind the cancellations ofDaredevil , Luke Cage , andIron Fist , although one of the least pressing is the looming front ofDisney Plus , since these decisions are Netflix ’s alone .

The Marvel Netflix show have plainly been in descent , either in terms of spectator or lineament ( or both ) , from some prison term . And all of that can be retrace back to just one serial : The Defenders .
Marvel Netflix Shows Were All Building To The Defenders
When Netflix and Marvel first announced their mega - deal , there was a clear design in place . 60 episodes of television would be produce , with 13 each forDaredevil , Jessica Jones , Luke Cage , andIron Fist . That would all lead toThe Defenders , an eight - installment event series bringing the heroes together .
Still , the shows started out as relatively disjunct . There were some shared links -Rosario Dawson ’s Claire Templethe biggest - but mostly they told ego - stop write up . Like MCU ’s Phase 1 , the point was to install these character , and then team them up .
Things started ramp up further toThe DefenderswithDaredevil’ssecond time of year , which introduced the Hand . The villain were then featured intemperately inIron Fist’sdebut hunt down too . That might have been underwhelming , but then not every Phase 1 movie was a hit . This was about the bigger mental picture , manifest by the reveal thatthe Handwould be the villains once more inThe Defenders . There was n’t much talk of individual account in the future , because the focus was the team up .

The Defenders Was A Disappointment
The Defenders , then , was essentiallyThe Avengersof the Netflix MCU . Each hero had been introduced , the stakes and universe established - now it was time to bring them together and let fireworks commence . Unfortunately , The Defenderscompletely fizzled out . thing did n’t start well , with the show taking until the end of the third episode to even assemble the team . From there , a serial publication of trip ensured it did n’t hail tight to its electric potential .
The fighting scenes could n’t pass the heights ofDaredevil . The Hand was once again incredibly obtuse . The direction was lackluster . Worst of all , it could never justify a reason for the squad to be together . It felt more like a story for a stand - alone season ofIron clenched fist , rather than the street - horizontal surface version of The Avengers .
It was n’t a concluded calamity : there were some particularly good character import for Matt Murdock and Jessica Jones , and significant apparatus forDaredevilseason 3 . That was n’t enough to leave it feeling like a major disappointment though . The Avengersworked so well it ’s gruelling to think what would ’ve happened to the MCU had it failed . WithThe Defenders , we do n’t have to imagine . The show ’s lack of quality has had a knock - on effect , which the Netflix MCU has n’t recovered from .

Marvel Netflix Shows Started Losing Viewers Massively Post-Defenders
WithThe Defendersa letdown , it ’s intelligible that viewers started to turn off . There ’d been a svelte downturn in timbre anyway -Daredevilseason 2 was n’t as salutary as time of year 1;Luke Cagedropped off in the second - half;Iron Fistwas never great - but it would ’ve more forgivable hadThe Defenderslanded . It did n’t , so it was n’t .
interrelate : Why Daredevil Was strike down By Netflix
Netflix is notoriously secretive when it comes to ratings , so we do n’t know just how many people watched each serial . The best gauge , however , comes from analytics company Jumpshot . Theinformation they provided entirely toScreen Rantshows a clear blueprint : Netflix Marvel show have been more and more losing viewers sinceThe Defenders . Some were a little more svelte , but in a few cases , there are large drop - offs .
The descent actually started afterDaredevilseason 2 , but that was marginal and unsurprising . temerarious is the home name here , after all . AfterThe Defenders , though , things look much worse . On Jumpshot ’s index measuring consider habits in the first week of discharge , withDaredevilseason 2 ( the first one they tracked ) as 100,The Defendersscored a 61 . Before then , the lowest score wasIron Fistwith 80 . After , Jessica JonesSeason 2 send away to 53.Luke Cageand especiallyIron Fisthad much more dramatic downslope , to 38 and 29 respectively . The Punisherbucked the trend , but that characterwasn’t part ofThe Defenders . Daredevilseason 3 bounced backslightly too against the breaking ball , but still did n’t muster one-half of season 2 ’s viewership .
Each serial had their own varying ( and declining ) service line of fans , but the shared universe has go bad . The Defenderswas Netflix and Marvel ’s opportunity to make another argument , like to the one they made withDaredevilseason 1 . To say the MCU model work on the small silver screen . To say it was a universe worth invest time ( and money ) in . at last , The Defendersdidn’t say anything of the form . It did n’t really say anything at all .
Marvel Netflix Has Had No Direction Since The Defenders
SinceThe Defendersreleased back in August 2017 , there have been five seasons of Marvel Netflix shows . All of the master Cuban sandwich have had another rill - out , plusThe Punisherreceived his own solo serial ( withseason 2 arriving short ) .

These show have been something of a mixed travelling bag . The Punisherstarted off solid but slow , yet finished with an almighty bang . Daredevil’sthird season is arguably the best yet . On the other hand , Jessica Jonesseason 2 was a huge step down from the first . Luke Cagewas around on par , andIron Fistimproved , but no one really seemed to handle .
What ’s been renowned throughout , though , is that Netflix and Marvel have given up onThe Defendersand its machine-accessible simulation . The odd fibre has appear here and there , but the series mostly feel disparate . Despite plenty of tease , Iron Fist only turned up for one episode inLuke Cage . Claire Temple disappeared midway through and never returned . It was like if Captain America turned up inIron Man 3 , only to suddenly settle he had better places to be . It’sThe Defendersparadox . They ’re locked into a macrocosm , but that macrocosm is n’t actually going anywhere . It does n’t even feel like a right shared universe , but then still makes the odd reference that stand for they ca n’t truly standalone either .
With the first season of the Marvel Netflix show , it at least felt like there was a clear plan . That they were building to something . Most of the subsequence - esque second seasons have plainly felt corporate mandated . There ’s been no clear direction sinceThe Defenders , which also means there ’s been no reason to watch all of the shows . Add in bad reviews and generally electronegative reception to a lot of the series , and it ’s only natural a lot of people gave up . In the Netflix MCU ’s Phase One , it felt necessary to watch every series . They were all man in a bigger , exciting puzzle . In Phase Two , too many of them felt spendable , and clearly Netflix agreed . Thecancellations ofThe PunisherandJessica Jonesfeel like formalities . When those cancellation hap , and the Netflix MCU is done , it ’ll be because ofThe withstander .
