Now , executive producer Marco Ramirez has shared some more details withEntertainment Weekly . He still dodge around many specifics , but provided some brainwave into how thing come together . He said that one of the first big challenge was navigating the ongoing storylines in the standalone shows . Jessica Jones , Luke Cage , andIron Fistare all between their first and 2nd seasons — assumingIron Fistwill be renewed after its March premiere — whileDaredevilis between its 2d and third . This intend they had to be careful about making their narratives line up , and be thoughtful about whereDefendersfit in to the pre - establish Marvel universe . As Ramirez toldEW :
“ This will be a serialized story that feel like it is about one kind of contained result and story in our worldly concern . It ’ll be one satisfying , self - contained piece … We never wanted anyone to find like they ’re a guest on anyone else ’s show . It ’s weirdly about all four of them . It ’s about all of their corporate report finally folding in on each other … To me , it ’s about four autonomous thinker on their own flawed journeys who realize for a brief second in time , they ’re really warm together than they are apart . It ’s in the end a history about a family of orphan who are very grown - up but still have more develop up to do . ”
Ramirez remained tight - lipped regarding the premise , but offer that “ the history is kind of a guesswork of adrenaline to the neck . ” The serial will be eight episode as opposed to its sister shows ’ common 13 , makingDefenderseven heavier on the action . As for what bring such a diverse band of characters together , he aver it was something big but still within the kingdom of what made sense for their world . He toldEW :
“ I ca n’t key too much , but I can say that we knew it had to be something big . We knew it would take something monumental to pluck these four characters from their individual worlds to wreak together , but also little enough that it feel like it existed in our world . It involve to be a crisis that bring these the great unwashed together , but it still needed to be a very street - tier crisis . That ’s the world we ’re dealing with , so it could n’t be anything too sci - fi or too supernatural or big . ”
Alas , viewers will have to wait several months to see what incisively all that means , but it ’s the first major — and in all likelihood most specific — wind at whatDefendersmay convey . It ’s refreshing to discover that it will add depth to each fiber without simply glom on to what ’s already been outlined , and will also assist put into perspective their relationships with one another . From the sounds of it , the project will be a separate but cohesive beast .
