Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb has explained whyThe Defendersseason 1 is shorter than the former Marvel / Netflix television show season . WhereasThe Defendersseason 1 will only have eight episodes , Daredevil , Jessica Jones , Luke CageandIron Fisthave all had 13 episode per season by comparison - opening up some questions as to why the short distance for the Marvel / Netflix crossing over event .
The shortened length ofThe Defenderscould in part be down to late criticism of Netflix ’s slow - burn Marvel superhero drama approach . With each episode being an hour in length , the the like ofLuke Cage , Jessica Jones , Iron FistandDaredevilhave all ( arguably ) taken at least four hours to really get the floor going , prompting complaints that each time of year is plainly too tenacious and drawn - out . It ’s also potential , of class , that the price of an extra five episode ofThe Defenderswas guess to be too expensive .

" It had nothing to do with cost , it was always eight . It had to do with what was the best way of life to narrate the floor and our notion was it break really nicely , and when you ascertain the show you sort of see that ’s sort of Act 1 and that ’s Act 2 and Act 3 . You know , you have to recall that when you have that many characters you have to be able to serve them , but you also do n’t want to clog the audience , and you want to be able to say a history that ’s compelling and will go along , and look , if you finish the eight and bid there was 13 , then undecomposed on us . "
This eight - episode season length will hopefully keep the plot line much tighter , as we see the New York superheroes team up to take on The Hand , a returned Elektra ( Elodie Yung ) andnew villain Alexandra ( Sigourney Weaver ) . Like Wilson Fisk ( Vincent D’Onofrio ) , there is a tranquil dignity to Alexandra ’s villainy that no incertitude conceal a seriously dark resister underneath . The fact that she’sputting Madame Gao ( Wai Ching Ho)in her place in a late clip demonstrate how powerful she ’s going to be in the newfangled series .
However , the first installment ( which was show at San Diego Comic - Con 2017 ) wo n’t see Matt Murdock ( Charlie Cox ) , Jessica Jones ( Krysten Ritter ) , Luke Cage ( Mike Colter ) or Danny Rand ( Finn Jones ) partake the filmdom together , which means we ’ll have to waitress until at least instalment 2 before we see the team link up .
The Defenderswill not only convey together these Marvel heroes for the first meter on screen door , but also the ilk of Foggy Nelson ( Elden Henson ) and Karen Page ( Deborah Ann Woll ) fromDaredevil ; Malcolm Ducasse ( Eka Darville ) and Trish Walker ( Rachael Taylor ) fromJessica Jones ; Misty Knight ( Simone Missick ) fromLuke Cageand Coleen Wing ( Jessica Henwick ) fromIron Fist , as well as Jeri Hogarth ( Carrie - Ann Moss ) and Claire Temple ( Rosario Dawson ) , as lastly their private TV show arc come together .
